As a Director to the AIF, CIFT assists in achieving the mission of educating the community on agriculture and stimulating interest in and respect for agriculture as a mainstay for the area economy. One effort in doing so is reflected through the small business assistance provided by NOCK. CIFT provides business and technical assistance to entrepreneurs exploring the establishment of a food business. This commercially designed outlet offers a location for the development and production of specialty, value-added foods. To date, seven businesses have entered the marketplace with additional approaching production capability while more than 130 have benefited from the information, business and technical assistance provided. Two catering businesses have utilized the facility as a means to accommodate expansion efforts.
As part of the small business initiatives, CIFT coordinates training seminars for entrepreneurs interested in learning how to establish their own food business. In conjunction with the Northwest Ohio Cooperative Kitchen, seminars addressing business planning, marketing, food safety, retailing, distribution, labeling regulations, funding options, and more are presented by professionals and successful business operators. One such business owner, Captain Rodney of Bell Buckle Country Store in Bell Buckle, Tennessee shared his strategies and successes by offering a personal insight into surviving with a small food business and entrepreneurial spirit.
Building upon Northwest Ohio’s strong produce production and food processing history, the incubator kitchen provides the necessary avenues for value-added success. As entrepreneurs continue to gain insight and direction and ultimately production capacity, more food businesses will thrive within the region.
